DIY Microwave Heat Pack

28 Nov

HEAT PACK photo

If you’re looking for an easy sewing project for holiday or any gift giving occasion, this Microwave HEAT PACK instructions and labels is the perfect solution.

It’s made with cotton and flannel fabric and filled with rice which can withstand repeated heating in the microwave.  There’s sewn in ties to keep the Pack nicely folded for easy storage, and labels that can be printed on card stock and tied onto the Pack or printed on iron on transfer paper and ironed on (as pictured).

It’s a great way to use up your scrap fabric.  You could also make a larger one and use it as a heated lap cover for the cold winter months.  This would be perfect for older seniors.

I have a rice pack I made over 10 years ago!  I store mine in the freezer.  My husband uses it to cool down in the summer, and we microwave it when we need it heated.

Homemade Gifts For Mom

14 May

Natural room scents

I hope all you Mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day.  Rather than giving my Mom a hanging plant this year, I decided to make her a few things.

Natural Room (Simmering) Scents

I saw these several months ago on The Yummy Life and wanted to give them a try but never got around to it. Then the other day I thought about them when I saw the fruit on my table and decided I’d make them for my Mom for Mother’s Day. They were really easy and fun to make, and I just love how colorful the fresh ingredients look in the jars.

Here’s the scents, from left to right:

Pine twigs, whole bay leaves and whole nutmeg, pine needle essential oil

Sliced oranges, fresh ginger slices and almond extract

Sliced limes, fresh thyme sprigs, peppermint oil and vanilla bean pieces

Sliced Oranges, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and allspice

Sliced Lemons, fresh rosemary sprigs and vanilla bean pieces

To use, you simply pour the contents in a pan and simmer on the stove, or heat it in the microwave and add it to a crock pot or fondue pot.

Here’s the Lime, thyme, peppermint and vanilla one I made myself simmering in my fondue pot. Mmm, I can really smell the mint and vanilla! For my mom, I had a mini Rival crock pot I gave her because the water doesn’t evaporate as fast as it does simmering.

Tea and water bottle cozy

Tea and Water Bottle Cozy

In addition to the natural room scents, I gave her some “sleepytime” tea, because she says she has a hard time sleeping, and this quilted cozy I made for her water bottles. During my last visit she pointed out the napkin she wraps around her cold water bottle to absorb the moisture when it sweats…lol!

My Light Up Christmas Present

22 Dec

light up christmas present

This was my last “present” Christmas decoration.   It was really  easy to make. Here’s how.

1 large box

100 multicolor Christmas lights

White wrapping paper (I just used the reverse side of paper I had)

Large nail

Pen

Large bow

Push the top flaps of the box inside. This will be the bottom. Cut an opening at the bottom on the back side for the light cord. Wrap.

On the inside of the box, mark where the holes need to be using the lights as a guide.

Using the nail, push it through the hole marks, then use the pen to make the hole large enough for the light. You want the hole snug so don’t push too hard.

With the back of the box facing you, start inserting the lights through the holes on the LEFT side of the box and work around to the back. Tape the cords down if needed.

Add the Bow and your done!

Here’s how it looks with the lights down low…beautiful!

Play Shirts For The Grandkids

18 Dec

super grandkids play tops

My last sewing project for Christmas were these cute play tops for my grandkids, Kylan, 4, Caden, 3 and Kinzley, 21 months.

Kylan's top

Kylan likes orange, so I purchased an orange shirt. For his cape I used some shiny gold poly fabric I had. It drapes great and doesn’t fray, so I just cut a large square, gathered the corners, enclosed them in bias tape and sewed the tape to the shirt along the shoulder seams…how easy is that!

The front logos I created on my computer and printed them on Dark Tee Shirt iron on paper.  I used different font colors for each child to match their shirts.

Caden's top

For Caden I bought a blue shirt and used shiny silver poly fabric I had for his cape.

Kinzley's play top

For Kinzley, I bought a bright pink shirt and then made a ruffled skirt from some bright shiny blue and purple fabric I had, and sewed it to the shirt. Her cape is made from some shiny black poly fabric I had.

I can’t wait to see my “Super” grandkids in their new play shirts!

My “Presents” Christmas Decorations

12 Dec

Well, I think I’m done making the decorations for my “present” Christmas theme.

present wrapped cabinets

In the kitchen/eating area I wrapped the cabinets as presents. It was easy and really brightens up the area. It was my husbands idea…can’t believe I didn’t think of it.

angle and snowman present toppers

Here’s my angel and snowman “present” toppers made with my circut. They stand 28” and 30” tall. I think the kids will get a kick out of them!

santa present topper

And of course I couldn’t leave Santa out! He’s on top of our hutch that I plan on decorating with garland and lights…and a couple of presents.

PRESENTS Christmas Staricase Decoration

The biggest “present” decoration of all is my present Christmas staircase.  I love it and it was super easy to do. For the how-to, click here.  I made a few other “presents” to decorate the window.

Gift Bag Presents

Here’s the “present” gift bags for the adults. I just used small brown bags my daughter gave me and added some small white circle labels and a bow I made with my cricut machine.

Angel Kisses cut outs

For the kids gifts I’m planning on making Rice Krispie Angels using a funnel to form the treats, wrapping them in foil and adding the boy and girl angel cutouts.

Hot Cocoa Gift Cones

The kids will also get one of these Hot Cocoa Gift Cones.

Now all I have to do is put it all together. My husband and I usually spends one evening putting it all together. We have a lot of fun and he really gets into it!

new addition to by christmas decorations

Speaking of my husband. Here’s a cute light up snowman he bought me. He buys me something each year to add to our Christmas decorations. Isn’t that sweet:)!!
