New Sewing Patterns For The College Student

6 Jun
College Dorm Laundry Bag Digital Sewing Pattern

My niece’s daughter, Hannah, just graduated high school and is going to college this fall. Boy, does time fly!

Wanting to sew her something, I came up with this Laundry Bag with a front pocket for holding laundry detergent and fabric softener sheets. Her college colors are red, white and black, so this red and white polka dot and black fabric was perfect!

To make it strong and easy to carry, I added grommets for the drawstring closure and 1 1/2″ wide webbing handle with a Dring for easy hanging. The finished bag measures 29″ X 12 3/4″ and holds A LOT…I stuffed it with a king size comforter for the photos, LOL!

I’m sure she’ll get lots of use from this!

Closet Hanger Safe

You gotta be careful these days, so I thought I’d make Hannah this Closet Hanger Safe for her to keep her money, jewelry and other important items out of sight. It’s a quick and easy sew and uses scrap fabric or fat quarters.

This Clothes Hanger Safe has two zippered pockets, measures 16″ X 9″ open and has a Velcro closure to keep it secure on the hanger.

There’s also an optional ribbon/cording that’s attached to the back so it can fit all size hangers.

I made myself one, of course, but don’t tell my husband… don’t want him snooping around my closet, hahaha!

My Warm and Cozy Fleece Cover Up

20 Jan
My Warm and Cozy Fleece Cover Up

Here in Ohio, we just got hit with an ice storm! It’s cold and blowing…perfect weather to wear my super warm and cozy Fleece Cover Up and relax and read a good book. For the FREE how-to tutorial, I posted the pdf file at the end of this post.

The Cover Up goes over your head, has side armholes, a large front pocket, on which I added a reverse applique, and mini pompom decorative trim.

The back hangs down 20″ and has a neck opening. The Cover Up is meant to be worn sitting or lounging, so there’s really no reason to have a long back…it saves on the amount of fleece you’ll need too:)

Here’s my grand daughter, Kinzley, in her “Princess” Fleece Cover Up I made her. I also made her mom one with three hearts (one for each child) on the pocket. She keeps it in their camper for sitting around the campfire…Great idea!

18 Dec

Well, I just finished sewing the last grocery bag for Christmas! I had so much fun sewing them in the fabric each person had picked out…except for

My husband’s Cleveland Browns tailgate bag!

I added a pocket on each end, and filled them with cooking and eating utensils,  cutting board, knife, wipes and foil sheets.

This is for my son,

These are for my granddaughters mom and my sister.

My sewing is FINALLY done!

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!

My Reusable Grocery Bag Set Sewing Pattern

27 Nov

I just finished sewing and posting these TWO reusable grocery bag patterns I made for my daughter for Christmas.  She and her family won’t be able to make it home for Christmas so I needed to get them done and shipped…along with a grocery gift card to help her fill them up with :)

The larger grocery bag measures 20” X 14 1/2” X 10”, and can easily hold 5 -6 bags worth of groceries, which cuts down on the number of trips into the house.

The smaller grocery bag measures 18” X 13” X 8” and is constructed with a thermal lining to keep all your cold and frozen foods cold!

Both reusable grocery bags pictured were constructed from just 1 yard solid and 1 yard print waterproof canvas from FWDfabrics.com (the BEST waterproof canvas).

The easy to follow step by step photo instructions makes these bags a quick sew. Perfect for gift giving!  You can purchase the pattern at my Etsy Shop.

My New Favorite Waterproof Canvas Fabric!

17 Sep

Fabric Wholesale Direct (FWD) is my new source for waterproof canvas fabric. Previously, I had used and recommended Pro-Tuff waterproof canvas I found at Walmart. The problem with Pro-Tuff is that it only comes in black, blue, grey and green, and it’s getting hard to find.

I found FWD online and noticed that they carried several colors, which was great! The description said it has a waterproof PVC backing, mold and UV resistant qualities, is extremely flexible and resists creasing, and is 60” – 62” wide. I was really interested in the flexible, crease resistant qualities because I found the Pro-Tuff canvas backing to be a bit stiff and showed a lot of creases. In addition, their shipping is a flat $6.99 (free with $75+ order), which is great considering the weight of the fabric.

I decided to give it a try and ordered some black. Boy was I glad I did! The fabric WAS nice and flexible and didn’t crease and was very easy to cut and sew.

Since finding this waterproof canvas fabric, I’ve made the following:

My Laundry Hamper with Drawstring Laundry Bag that can also be used as a storage hamper. You can purchase this sewing pattern for $4.50 by emailing me.

This lined Ohio State Travel Bag and Dopp Toiletry Bag for my husband and…

These unlined overnight bags for the Grandkids.

FWD also has PRINTED waterproof canvas fabric for just $7.99 a yard! I think I’m going to make

another one of my Shopping Cart Grocery Bags from this print…I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

There are so many items you can make using this waterproof canvas! If you need some ideas, here’s some of my sewing patterns that would work, and they’d make great holiday gifts too!  First Aid Bag (with Free Iron On Labels)Expandable Travel Trash Bag $3.50 at my Etsy Shop:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/pegsgottado/The Little LITTER Bag $2.50

My First Aid Bag Sewing Pattern

19 Oct

bags and first aid ointment

This simple bag is one that I am so glad I created!  I’ve used it several times for myself, my husband and grand kids.  In fact, my grandson told me the other day when he needed a band-aid, “Grandma you’re always Prepared.”  Yep, it has really come in handy.

multiple black bags

My sister is a Beautician and had asked me to make her some for Christmas gifts for her clients.  I had lots of black fabric so I ordered multicolored zippers.  I liked how they turned out.

The bag holds lots of stuff whether it’s just for you or for your whole family!  You can purchase the pattern with labels for $3.00 by emailing me…  Craftsy has decided to remove all but 4 of my patterns plus hundreds of other designers patterns!

Visor Caddy For Lou

10 Jul

DIY Visor Caddy

As a little something extra for Father’s Day, I made my husband this Visor Caddy for his work van.  It holds a 4″ X 6″ notepad, pen/pencil, a travel size pack of tissues, two business card holders (one for his card to give out and one for the cards he receives), and a zipper pocket for receipts or…whatever.

Attached to visor

The visor measures 16″ X 7″ and attaches to the visor with elastic sewn on the backside.  Here’s the DIY Visor Caddy Pattern you can download.  Since this was for a cargo van, I suggest you compare it with your visor so you can make whatever changes might be needed.

I finally finished writing the sewing pattern for these Travel and Toiletry Bags that have been sitting in my sewing area for weeks!  I promised my daughter she could have them (she gave me the idea) and the other day she saw them and said, “I can’t wait to get my bags”…OK, Katie, I got the hint.  They’re all yours:)

Shopping Cart Grocery Bag Sewing Pattern

6 Jun

In Shopping Cart

I have to tell you, I LOVE THIS Grocery Bag!

I designed it to use at the new ALDI store that recently opened in our area. This grocery store requires you to bag your own groceries, so this Shopping Cart Grocery Bag does the job wonderfully, and the large size helps get the groceries into the house a whole lot quicker too!

The bag quickly and easily attaches to a standard shopping cart and has a large and small front pocket to hold a notepad, pen, coupons, your purse/wallet and so much more.

Made from durable Outdoor Pro-Tuff Fabric (sold at Walmart), this bag is nice and strong.  The backside (bag interior) of this fabric is 100% PVC, so it’s easy to clean and eliminates the need for a lining.

Update: Go to FWD.com for the best waterproof canvas fabric!  It comes in solid and print.

When not in use, simply fold and store it in your car or truck so it’s available when you need it.

UPDATE:

The other day I got caught in the pouring rain leaving the grocery store. Boy was I happy I used my Shopping Cart Grocery Bag!!!

Shopping cart bag Caught in the Rain1

Shopping Cart Bag Caught in the Rain2

Here it is after I brought it in. It was filled with 5 plastic grocery bags plus four (4) 2 litters.  It was heavy, but I just heaved it out of the cart and into the backseat. Thankfully it only took a few seconds. My hair and shirt didn’t far as good…I looked like a drowned rat when I got home. LOL!

The rain never soaked through the Grocery bag (because of the PVC backing), and the rain that did get inside was easily wiped dry with a towel.

Ohio State Shopping Cart Grocery Bag

Here’s an Ohio State one I made for my daughter from the grey Pro-Tuff fabric. I printed the side logo on dark iron on transfer paper.

USA Shopping Cart Grocery Bag

And, here’s one I made from the Blue Pro-Tuff fabric. With the Fourth Of July just around the corner, the blue went perfect with the red, white and blue ribbon trim on the handles and front pockets.
